A glimpse into the sights of Itsukushima Shrine, junior Ryley Agsalda sits on the lookout of Miyajima Island’s torri gates off of the Hiroshima prefecture. Students were able to walk out to the torri gates since the island was at low tide; if it was high tide the gate would appear as if it was floating on top of the ocean.

Senior Angela Lee is truly a fighter, involved in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), pankration, jujitsu and muay thai, as well as on MHS’ wrestling team. The next thing she will be tackling is college at University of Hawaii – West Oahu.

“I feel excited (to go to college), just about being in a new environment and all,” said Lee.

Even though Lee got offered scholarships from different mainland colleges for her wrestling, she declined them and decided to stay in Hawaii. “I’m going to stay here for school and I’m going to train MMA. I want to stay close to home because my dad trains me,” said Lee.

Although excited about college, Lee will have to face the same challenges many student athletes do. “I’m scared of how I’m going to manage my time while juggling school and training and work,” said Lee. Though concerned, she has the support of her family. “She’s definitely capable of going to college and doing well,” said her brother, Sophomore Christian Lee.

Though athletics isn’t a trade off for academics and her parents expect her to do well in both, they support her either way. “Our deal for her to compete in sports is to continue her post secondary education. It is not an option,” her father Ken Lee said, “I want her to live out her dreams, if it is in athletics, I will support her.”

Having won against many obstacles and opponents, Angela still stays down to earth. “She doesn’t let her accomplishments get to her head and she is determined to pay it forward by teaching the youth classes,” said Ken Lee.

Currently, Angela Lee plans to take a break from wrestling in college and focus more on MMA fighting. Still unsure about her post-college plans, Angela Lee is planning to keep her options open and enjoy the new experiences the future will provide.
