The grant given to MHS by the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) has proven to be beneficial for AP students in halving exam costs and offering monetary incentives for passing scores. Now the trend continues with the introduction of AP exam retakes for students who did not receive a 5 on their tests. This opportunity is given to any past AP Math, English, or Science student wishing to improve their score from last year. The same benefits of regular AP exams also apply to retakes, which cost $43.50 compared to the regular $87. Students who score better than their first attempt also receive the $100 incentive that is offered to students that score a 3 or higher on their exams.
MHS is one of only four Hawaii high schools to receive the NMSI grant and be given such an opportunity. AP fees are due Nov. 23, so students interested in applying for retakes must contact Lisa Tsuruda by that date.
